The term "targeted" used by law enforcement can be misleading in this case. It could mean one or more person was "targeted" as the reason for the murders. It can also mean these girls were "targeted" for other reasons. These girls had a high social media presents, they loved the attention they were getting from their pictures and tweets. The suspect might not know them personally but "targeted" them for other reasons.

They could have triggered a person who was stalking them on their social media posts. They could have reminded him/her of a past slight or rejection received from a past girlfriend or a rejection from a girl who looks like these girls, acted like these girls, had the same body type, hair color and behavior patterns as these girls. Triggering the attacker into action much like Ted Bundy did during his killing spree.

If a female was the attacker, they may have reminded her of past rejection or ridicule and this triggered a past painful memory and triggered her into taking revenge against them.

The FBI profilers will be looking at the crime scene photos, looking at the photos of the bodies, reading the autopsy reports to determine if one of the girls had different stab wounds than the other girls had. This would indicate one girl was targeted and they will take their investigation from there.

The other problem is many other people came into the house before the police arrived. There will be a lot of cross contamination within the crime scene this will be a nightmare for the investigators. There were no signs of a sexual attack, this does not mean it wasn't sexual in nature. Using a knife to kill the victim is up close and personal. The suspect could have had sex without leaving any trace evidence/DNA, he could have dry humped one or more of the female victims after stabbing her and ejaculated in his pants.

There was an eight hour time difference between the murders and the 911 call.

Weirdly, the 911 call logged at 11:58 AM, November 13 -- requested assistance for an unresponsive person, yet police say it was a bloodbath inside, with blood seeping through the walls onto the exterior of the house.

What I do not understand is the caller stated in the 911 call that one of the victims was unresponsive did he/she not see all the blood. The house was a bloody mess. This does not make sense to me. The 911 call should have been filled with emotion.
